Long Beach Wedding :: Liz & Norio

Liz and Norio got married in the middle of a Southern California heatwave that caused us to push the ceremony back to after cocktail hour so that their guests would be out of the sun. They created one of the hands down most personal, meaningful inter-faith ceremonies I’ve had the honor of witnessing, and followed with family-style dinner, dancing, and sparklers, all at Liz’s parents lovely house in Long Beach. It was an amazingly joyous day!

Congrats again you two!

I’ve been obsessed with Ample furniture for a while, their Modern Floor Lamp is at the very top of my wishlist. I was just over browsing their etsy store, and spotted their new modern photo frame:

You provide the image, they take care of the rest. Awesome way to display the one, abstracted wedding photo that you’re actually going to hang in your house? I think so.

Melody & Mark’s Brazilian Room Wedding

SO, finally time to catch up on weddings from this past fall! I’m going to try to blog all of the weddings from last year that I have professional photos from (and haven’t blogged already) over the next few weeks… going through them all again has been a great reminder of how much of a blast the second half of my 2011 wedding season was, which just makes me more excited for 2012. Let’s go!

Melody & Mark’s wedding was at the Brazil Room in Tilden Park on what had to have been one of the hottest days of the summer. When I first arrived the venue Melody & her mom were there, sitting on the floor of the giant, empty room applying their makeup. It was a pretty awesome way to start the day off.

Their ceremony was a great reflection of the two of them, and – instead of a bridesmaids & groomsmen, they had some of their close friends & family do a group reading of a poem, which was a really great way to include people close to them without having the big, traditional wedding party. They also self-solemnized the ceremony, which ended up being really powerful and intimate (I’ve seen it done before at Quaker weddings & have always loved it.)

Melody & Mark are both musicians, and so music played a big part in their wedding. They had two separate bands (one for the ceremony & cocktail hour, one for later in the night) and a DJ. Needless to say – it was awesome.

The dessert buffet (aside – I love dessert buffets at weddings. And I think that most guests prefer them to traditional wedding cake) was primarily made by Tara of Fox and Fawn, who happens to be Mark’s sister in law, but also happens to be a killer baker. Seriously – contact her about your wedding. Even if you’re not vegan. No joke. Dinner was catered by Trumpetvine Catering, who remain one of my favorite vendors to work with.

This photo below is a kind of perfect example of why the Brazil Room remains one of the most popular wedding venues in the Bay Area:

pet lion

I have always half-joked that I want a pet lion or tiger – imagine the reactions you would get when it walked into a room full of guests during a party.

While I understand that keeping a [large, dangerous] wild animal as a pet is actually a terrible idea on many levels, I’m not gonna lie – this vintage photoset from LIFE of a family and their pet lion is making me kind of jealous.

Alissa & Alex’s Brazilian Room Wedding

The first of the pro-photos came back from the wedding I did on June 12, and they are gorgeous. Carmen Alvarez was a true dream of a photographer to work with, and she did an amazing job of capturing the utter joy of this wedding.

Also – one reason to think about getting married at the Brazilian Room, besides all of the obvious this-venue-is-great ones? You can take pictures at the near by Tilden Park Merry-Go-Round. Awesomeness:

This wedding really was such a pleasure to work on (which was good, since I worked on it for 14 months!) – I’ve known the couple for a long time, which of course made it meaningful for me, but really in the end what made it special for everyone was seeing Alissa & Alex so obviously in love. As I like to tell my clients when they’re starting to get freaked out by details – in the end, that’s the only part of a wedding that really matters.
